Dams on the river Syr-Darya
Nature of Kazakhstan
If you drive through the Kokaral dam from west to east, 30 kilometers after the discharge dam there is another dam - a waterworks Aklaksky at the mouth of the Syr Darya. Nearly hundred-meter canyon – is the only arm by which the river now flows into the Aral Sea, which is blocked by hard steel gates. When Aklak started to function, the water in the lower reaches of the Syr Darya has risen to the level of 53 meters, filling deltaic canals and lakes where fish started to spawn. Aklak waterworks was built by a Russian company.
Now people are working on the second phase project of revival of the northern Aral Sea. They are planning to spend around 250 - $ 300 million to reconstruct the system of reservoirs on the Syr Darya river in Kazakhstan, to clean the riverbed and build another dam with a more powerful gateway at the entrance to the Gulf of Sary-Shaganak, which stands on the shore of Aral.
The water of Syr Darya should fill the bay through the 50-meter channel, the channel is going to be dug from the delta lakes Kamyshlybash to the port Aral.
The difference in height between the upper stream and downstream pools is more than twenty meters. Hydro station should bring great benefits to Aklak coastal zone.
The inhabitants of fishing villages such as Bugun, Karateren and other traditional fishing villages hope that someday the revival of the Aral industry comes true .
